A836 Average Speed Cameras enforcement ends

27/11/24

Police Scotland’s North Safety Camera Unit have now carried out two months of enforcement by average speed cameras on the A836 between Reay and Thurso.

The average speed cameras were deployed on a temporary basis as part of plans to improve road safety and encourage better speed compliance on Scotland’s roads.  During September and October the cameras detected zero offences, albeit they were not fully operational at all times.

Eric Dunion, North Safety Camera Unit Manager says: “We believe the cameras have been extremely successful in reminding motorists of their speeds and encouraging them to drive within the limits.

A two month period of enforcement which results in zero offences is a very positive exercise for us’.

The cameras, which are the first average speed systems which can be moved between location and the first to make use of renewable energy using a combination of solar and bio-methanol sources, have now been removed from the stretch of road and work is ongoing to determine their next best suited location.
