Dundee fixed cameras update
The two fixed Vector SR cameras on the Kingsway became operational on the 29th June and have now been enforcing for nearly 4 months.
The decision to change the method of enforcement at the location, from mobile enforcement to fixed roadside enforcement, was taken collectively by Police Scotland, The Scottish Safety Camera Programme and Transport Scotland after the most recent speed survey had highlighted that almost 50% of vehicles travelling along the road where above the 40mph speed limit. In addition, speeds of double the speed limit had been recorded on a regular basis
Reviewing the first 12 weeks of operation, the cameras have recorded 1094 offences. Of these offences 418 have been to vehicles registered to residents with DD postcodes.
Cars accounted for 905 offences whilst 117 were Light Goods Vehicles and 8 Motorcycles.
Alarmingly, 17 vehicles have been detected travelling at or over double the 40mph speed limit in place and 355 vehicles travelling in excess of 60mph.
Eric Dunion, Area Manager of Police Scotland's North Safety Camera Unit says: “Whilst we had anticipated that the introduction of the fixed cameras would lead to an increase in the number of detections I am shocked at the level of offenders and the speeds that have been captured by these cameras on the Kingsway.
It is frustrating that there is a high level of non-compliance amongst local drivers who should be aware of the speed limits in place. As these two cameras are the first in the area we have been actively engaging with those in the Tayside area through the use of online streaming, local radio adverts and currently a digital board at the start of the Kingsway.
I would like to remind all motorists that our aim is not to catch motorists out, but to slow them down, to adhere the speed limits in place and in turn make our roads safer for all road users.”
