Fixed camera introduced on South Street, Glasgow, to tackle inappropriate speeds

30/10/2024

The new fixed camera on South Street is now enforcing the 30mph speed limit following complaints from residents and requests for additional police enforcement in the area.

South Street, Glasgow, was identified as a location where there is demand for enforcement from local policing due to excessive speeding, with residents describing the road as a ‘race track’. Collision data supported this enforcement with 12 injury collisions at the location over a 4 year period, and speed surveys confirming that 66% of vehicles are travelling above the speed limit.

This road is a mix of high volume, heavy industrial traffic and vulnerable road users. Mobile enforcement at this location is difficult due to the volume and type of parked vehicles along the road. Police Scotland, Safety Camera Unit and Glasgow City Council reviewed the location and concluded that the most suitable intervention available would be a fixed safety camera.

The addition of a fixed camera on South Street, at its junction with Balmoral Street, will assist in reducing these speeds and improving road safety for the local community.

Since the initial review there have been 10 further injury collisions at the site, including a fatal collision caused by excessive speed. These collisions further strengthen the need for additional enforcement in the area.

Alan Bowater, West Safety Camera Area Manager, ‘We will continue to work within Police Scotland to identify areas where speeding has contributed to injuries and deaths on the roads. The fixed camera enforcement will assist in improving driver behaviour on South Street and support local policing in making this area safer for all road users. ‘
