Fixed camera site on Great Western Road resumes enforcement of speed limit
17/02/2026
The fixed camera site on Great Western Road, at Keal Avenue, has returned to live enforcement following a period of dormancy.
The camera was previously placed into dormancy in April 2024, with the housing covered to indicate it was not in active use.
Recent data from ongoing monitoring and speed surveys has indicated a significant upturn in vehicle speeds and a decline in compliance with the posted limit at this site. Additionally, an injury collision occurred where speed was a contributory, though not primary factor. To ensure the continued safety of all road users and to mitigate the risk of further injury collisions, the decision has been made to remove the dormancy covers and resume active enforcement immediately.
Alan Bowater, Area Manager for the West Safety Camera unit; ‘While we prefer to see sustained compliance that allows for dormancy, the recent evidence of increased speeds coupled with an injury collision at this location is concerning. By resuming active enforcement, we are taking a proactive step to reduce the risk of future injury collisions.’
