Safety Cameras Scotland Highlights the Consequences of Summer Speeding

Safety Cameras Scotland are taking their social media summer campaign onto bus backs across the West of Scotland.

Safety Cameras Scotland aims to reduce the number of people injured on our roads through targeted camera enforcement and improving driver behaviour. We believe speeding is socially unacceptable and encourage everybody to drive at a speed appropriate for the road conditions. With the summer weather conditions and more hours of daylight, there is likely to be an increase in traffic, more vulnerable road users and motorists may feel that it is acceptable to travel above the speed limit. Additionally this year, due to the Covid-19 pandemic more of us will be choosing a “staycation” in Scotland, which will lead to a further increase in traffic on our roads.

To influence driver behaviour and encourage everyone to “stay within the speed limits this staycation”, Safety Camera Scotland’s campaign has been highlight summer driving hazards such as the presence of more vulnerable road users, while also emphasising the penalties of driving above the speed limit including £100 fine and 3 points on your licence as well as more serious consequences such as collisions and injuries.

The campaign has been running across social media, while poster and mobile digital advertising has been used at popular tourist routes and destinations within Scotland, reminding motorists to be vigilant as more people are easing out of lockdown and taking advantage of all Scotland has to offer. The campaign, which will run for 4 weeks on bus backs in the West of Scotland, highlights that the minimum penalty for failing to comply with the speed limits would be a £100 fine and 3 points on your licence.

Alan Bowater, Area Safety Camera Manager for the West; ‘Speeding creates hazards and dangers for passengers, other drivers, and pedestrians. We know that in a collision, the faster a vehicle is travelling at the time of impact, the more severe the injuries for everyone involved. This is an issue at all times of the year, however the lighter nights and better weather conditions creates an increase in traffic on the road which in turn places a greater risk on all road users. Safety Cameras Scotland have sites on many tourist routes, making the roads safer for all responsible road users. The consequences of speeding can be catastrophic, the least of these being 3 points on your licence and £100 fine.'
