North Safety Camera Unit dormant camera site review

A recent review of dormant safety camera sites across Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire has resulted in five fixed camera housings to be removed.
Under the guidance from Transport Scotland and the Safety Camera Programme Handbook all of Police Scotland’s safety camera sites are reviewed on an annual basis. The recent 2025 review revealed that five fixed cameras, which fell into dormancy after the 2022 review, must now be abandoned.
The decision has therefore been made by Police Scotland’s North Safety Camera Unit to permanently remove the camera housings, which for the last three years have been covered by bags marked 'not in use'.
The fixed cameras to be removed are;
A90 Peterhead to Fraserburgh Rd at Lunderton Cottage, St Fergus, Aberdeenshire.
A92 Dundee to Aberdeen Road near South Damhead, Bridge of Dee, Aberdeen.
A96 Auchmill Road, Bucksburn near Auchmill Terrace, Aberdeen
A96 Great Northern Road near junction with Queen Street, Aberdeen.
A96 Great Northern Road opposite number 726, Aberdeen.
The annual review, which considers collisions at each camera site and uses recent speed data to assess if there is an ongoing speeding issue at those sites, has also resulted in one dormant camera being reinstated to a ‘live’ site, meaning enforcement will recommence at:
A96 Auchmill Road, Bucksburn near Oldmeldrum Road, Aberdeen.
Eric Dunion, Police Scotland’s North Safety Camera Unit Manager says “For three years after camera sites fall into dormancy, we review collisions and vehicles speeds and consult with our Road Authority partners. This year we have decided to permanently remove five of the fixed camera housings whilst also reinstating one of the camera housings as a live enforcement site. We are an evidence-based casualty reduction programme and therefore must utilise our resources to those locations which will be of greatest benefit to road users by hopefully reducing vehicle speeds and in turn helping to reduce collisions on our roads’.
Superintendent Andy Barclay, Deputy Head of Road Policing, “Safety cameras are strategically deployed at locations to maximise their impact on reducing injury collisions and fatalities on Scotland’s roads. Having been monitoring the levels of speeds and collisions it is pleasing to see that five of these cameras no longer meet criteria and are set to be removed. We commend drivers for adhering to the speed limits in place at these locations contributing to safer communities and roads.
